The team spent over 50 hours researching the history, technology, brands and customer reviews of various yoga mats. Over 100 yoga practitioners of all levels and styles were surveyed to get an idea of their preferences, and ten yoga professionals were consulted. 80 publications, blogs, and reviews such as Amazon, REI, Yoga Consumer Reports, Outdoor Magazine, Yoga Journal and DoYouYoga were analyzed until the research team was able to develop a list of the 15 best yoga mats on the market. The criteria for making this list included the number of positive reviews, experiences, recognition and what the professional yogis had to say about the mats they were using.
Reviews.com also personally tested these mats in a variety of conditions such as studios that were heated and unheated, on carpets, on hardwood floors and put these mats through a typical 60-minute yoga class. The focus was on the mats traction, density, comfort, stability, weight, size, eco-footprint, and color. The price was a minor factor because most yoga practitioners didn’t mind paying more for a top quality mat that suited their needs.
